Technology Literacy in a Digital First World
Jurisdiction: Aotearoa New Zealand
Connected digital technologies are rapidly changing the way we live, learn, and work. But digital literacy is an important challenge facing New Zealand leading to digital exclusion.
How can we build a system which helps advance “Technology Literacy” in New Zealand to help advance our community equitably?
Digital literacy means having the skills you need to live, learn, and work in New Zealand society where communication and access to information is increasingly through digital technologies like internet platforms, social media, and mobile devices.
Technology literacy among citizens helps to build a community where no one is left behind in a digital world.
The challenge is to re-imagine and build a system which enables people across New Zealand community can confidently access information and services via digital technology like their mobile phones, apps and other digital platforms in their day-to-day life.
The project should look at citizens across their maturity to access and use digital devices and services from beginner / operational level to intermediate and advanced users.
As technology evolves, digital tools and services are always evolving as well. Technology literacy is thus not a static set of skills, but rather an ongoing process of development and maintenance. The online abilities that people need to be considered digitally included is a moving target. The solution will need to address this issue.
