Youth participation in STEM activities in the Northern Territory

Jurisdiction: Northern Territory

How can we use open data to engage youth at schools or at a community level to increase the levels of interest in STEM careers?

There is a great need in the Northern Territory to engage with youth in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) activities in a meaningful way, which will lead to more interest in pathways towards STEM careers. There is a shortage of STEM skilled workforce in the NT. The local industry is looking for more youth to choose STEM subjects and courses at the high school and undergrad level that can lead them to STEM-related professions.

STEM outreach projects targeting youth are usually more successful when they target real-life problems and set up challenges in which participants can recognise the value of the learning process and outcomes. By creating an engaging activity, we can involve more young people to select STEM-related subjects and get motivated to upskill themselves.

Use available open datasets to develop a project that addresses how the NT can promote STEM careers to its young generations.
